Friday Blog Question: Summer Movie Blockbusters in Phoenix
It’s the middle of Summer, and we’re halfway through this season’s collection of blockbusters. Summer has long been the time when the “big” films would get released, since that’s when all those students with all that disposable income were on the loose. For a time it seemed Summer didn’t matter anymore: Movies are now released all year long, not just in the summer and winter like they used to be, DVD rentals rule, online rentals are on their way, and there’s a Playstation in every room. So are Summers still the mythically great time for movies? Will it stay that way? And just for the hell of it, what film this summer did you either think was really great, or what film are you really looking forward to seeing still?
I think summer is still a great season for blockbusters because it's almost built into the culture - I just expect to see big name movies come out in the summer. Also, people just have more free time in general during the summer, or it at least seems that way. I know I've seen more movies lately. And, WALL-E is where it's at, definitely! Michelle Talsma
I don't really think it matters what the season is anymore - I think it just so happens that holiday weekends are big movie weekends and there are three of those from May - September which is when we are seeing the bulk of blockbusters coming out. And if you live in Arizona like we do, the movie theatre is one of the coldest places in town to hang out for a couple hours to beat the 110 degree heat. As for movies, my top picks are Ironman, Sex and the City and Batman (of course). Wanted gets a big thumbs down. Have not seen Wal-e yet - but it is on my list (but it may get bumped to netflix rental). Debby Hrach
The Dark Knight was the highlight of my summer movie experience, followed closely by Wall-E. So long as these kinds of films are released during the Summer, Summer matters. Joseph Jaramillo
Summer blockbusters were what I lived for when I was in a kid. When it was summer vacation in Tucson, there were just so many things we could do. One of them included going to the movies. Nowadays, there doesn’t seem to be as many summer blockbusters that catch my attention, or maybe I just don’t notice to them like I used to. I have seen Sex and the City, Hancock and The Dark Knight this summer, which were all great. However, that summer blockbuster hype no longer works as good on me. Ellen Stevens
I think especially here in Arizona, summer is still a great time for movies because the theaters are air conditioned! I think the best summer movie so far was Ironman, the worst was The Love Guru and I'm still looking forward to Tropic Thunder, Pineapple Express and Hamlet 2. Holly Ringerud
I think the summer will continue to be the great time to premiere the big blockbuster films because they offer adventure and excitement during a time when people most want it. The movies I’m really looking forward to are The Mummy and the House Bunny. Rosa Millan
