@offmadison and the value of Twitter

We've been running this @offmadison Twitter account for a couple of months now, and honestly it's been a tad dull. While most of us in the office Twitter frequently, the actual agency Twitters (Mighty Interactive can be found at @mightytweet) have been pretty much simply places where blog posts get reposted. That and our Flickr account, one of our other more active feeds. But it seems that just dumping a feed on something like Twitter goes against the idea of social. You don't "respond" to a feed, you respond to a person posting. Our newest search guy William has said before, whenever he sees that "from twitterfeed" at the end of a post, it makes his skin crawl. I have to agree. Of course, that's why most of us opt for using our own Twitter accounts rather than this company one. So we're going to be switching that up a bit, and using these company accounts to better purpose. The reposting from the blog will still happen, though - like everyone else on Twitter, I'm hungry for responses. But I also like hearing from others, and having actual dialog whenever possible. That is, after all, the whole point of this, isn't it? By the way, if you want to follow another twitter (besides our own, of course,) you should look at @MarsPhoenix,which is a fantastically neat take on the Twitter concept. It is NASA's Twitter for the Mars Lander, but is written from the actual perspective of the lander itself! This allows for great bits, like, "I know it LOOKS easy, but you try following instructions sent from 182 million miles away" or, "Team is also teaching me how to "sprinkle" soil samples on instruments instead of emptying the entire scoop. Practicing that today, too." One of those ones that, if you have kids, they'd probably love even more than you would.

How many staff members are using Twitter? Or Plurk? I would suggest you take a poll of all the office members that are, that wouldn't mind sharing their screen name, and post it here. That way we get a glimpse into the true nature and insight of the company vs. the glossed over @offmadison version. Twitter is designed for transparency of the individual or company in a raw unrehearsed form. Not as an echo chamber for polished presentation!
